True story not involving my mom (shocker I know):
So I have a friend, Kevin, that I have known for like I don’t know 12 years? I know him from when I used to blog about hockey. We always kept in contact and since I began this site I found out he’s also an avid reader of adult epic fantasy. Although, I did recently get him to listen to Six of Crows, Crooked Kingdom, Fate of the Fallen and soon The Written! WIN!
Anyhow, one day back in like, I don’t know, June? He is lamenting over the ending of a series that he absolutely LOVED as I talked about the imminent end of Arc of a Scythe and Folk of the Air. Mark Lawrence wrote the series he just finished.. I had never heard of said author.
Look. I get it. Late to all the parties.
In an effort to try and be helpful I went on Edelweiss to see if I could find when his next series started. Low and behold, I found The Girl and the Stars (Book Of Ice #1). I took a screenshot and sent it to him. He explained that Lawrence was an internationally best selling author. I went on twitter (not that I had reason to doubt Kevin, mind you) and there he was with his 28 thousand followers, awards and rabid fans.
Then I noticed that the publisher was the ACE imprint of Random House. I said hey Kevin… I know that imprint. We are friendly. I will send an email and ask for an ARC. It will probably give them a good laugh but why not try? He said he’d punch me in the face and that he was joking, but not really. So I sent this email at like 10 PM not ever expecting a response or if I would get one that it would be something like:
We love you but.. no.
And I would have completely understood. Not my lane and this is a huge artist and I’m this tiny corner of the reviewing world. I didn’t even have the part-time book selling gig at the time. I wake the very next morning and I have an email saying:
We will put you on the list.
After blinking my eyes ten times and smacking myself in the head? I take a screen shot and I send the email to Kevin, in complete shock.
Fast-forward to yesterday. BOOK MAIL! Diego?
This meme is hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine. If you’re continuing with WOW, feel free to link those up as well! Find out more here. This week I bring you The Kingdom of Liars by Nick Martell.
Release Date: April 21, 2020
Publisher: Ace Publisher
In the ice, east of the Black Rock, there is a hole into which broken children are thrown.
On Abeth the vastness of the ice holds no room for individuals. Survival together is barely possible. No one survives alone.
To resist the cold, to endure the months of night when even the air itself begins to freeze, requires a special breed. Variation is dangerous, difference is fatal. And Yaz is not the same.
Yaz is torn from the only life she’s ever known, away from her family, from the boy she thought she would spend her days with, and has to carve out a new path for herself in a world whose existence she never suspected. A world full of difference and mystery and danger.
Yaz learns that Abeth is older and stranger than she had ever imagined. She learns that her weaknesses are another kind of strength. And she learns to challenge the cruel arithmetic of survival that has always governed her people.
Only when it’s darkest you can see the stars.
Also soon to be added to the 2020 Spring/Summer Fling post (will be updated by/on Sunday)
