Devils and Black Sheep Ahoy! Saturday Top Five Books With Pirates I Have Or Want To Read

Hey Colorado Springs can laugh all they want! I know what my weather alert says and this could be the last Saturday Top Five I ever write so come enjoy it! Pirates await you on this faithful journey, along with dragons and meddling Gods. And of course, what is a Saturday Top Five if I don't break a rule or two?

Saturday Top Five: Stand Alone Books

I have linked Amanda’s post from last week basically because our shifts at work clash and I can’t catch her and she can’t catch me and so we are a week behind in linking each other but we get there (Wash, Rinse, Repeat)

This Saturday Top Five series for readers started back in October and I kind of lost motivation for making it every week. But it’s back! This is a series of books that I want to read that all have a common theme. Previously on the blog I have focused on witches, werewolves, thrillers, faeries, fairy tale retellings and high fantasy. I am going to try and bring this series back for every Saturday.

The Saturday Top Five Schedule for December:

12/6 -Standalone Books

12/13 – Books about Pirates

12/20 – Books that have been made into movies

12/27 – books coming in 2020

Rules!

  • Share your top 5 books of the current topic– these can be books that you want to read, have read and loved, have read and hated, you can do it any way you want.
  • Tag the original post (This one!)
  • Tag 5 people

Saturday Top Five – Books With Pirates I Have Or Want To Read

*And if you think this has been particularly benign for my typical posts so far- yay zuzu petals. You are paying attention. And yes, there is a reason… don’t worry it is coming. With a quickness (Hint: See Featured Image).

1) Pirates of the Caribbean (there is a word I will NEVER spell right on the first go, for as long as I live)

Nope. Not a book. Nope don’t care. I told you to wait for it. You didn’t even have to wait that long, did you? Come on now. Is there any more fantastically brilliant pirate than Jack Sparrow. Well for the first couple of movies, anyway? I can’t say anything different than anyone else. It is like Keith Richards as a pirate… and then he quite literally became one. Just a couple movies too late. Ok. Do I need to explain Keith Richards to the kids?

This is Keith Richards. From the Rolling Stones. Oh. Wait. Let me back that up.

My favorite Rolling Stones song– obviously just my favorite. Not even saying it is their best. Just my favorite.

And just for the record- I’m not even that old. My parents were hippies. I was raised on great music. You kids need to get a grip. That’s all. Ok. Now that our music history class is over for the day… back to the pirates. That WAS Keith Richards until he actually became Jack Sparrow’s father.

2-3) The Frith Chronicles by Shami Stovall

See I’m cheating again- because three books that I’m counting as two but in my defense the third isn’t out yet so THERE.

I ain’t even gonna try and lie. I just found out about this series. The first book, Knightmare Arcanist (that title alone gave me shivers) came out June, 2018. The second book (I’m not a cover person, as everyone knows… but these covers are something), Dead Pirate Arcanist, just came out in November and the third book, Coliseum Arcanist, comes out in February.

Let me state my intentions right now: I AM HERE FOR IT.

Knightmare Arcanist Summary:

Magic. Sailing. A murderer among heroes.

Gravedigger Volke Savan wants nothing more than to be like his hero, the legendary magical swashbuckler, Gregory Ruma. First he needs to become an arcanist, someone capable of wielding magic, which requires bonding with a mythical creature. And he’ll take anything—a pegasus, a griffin, a ravenous hydra—maybe even a leviathan, like Ruma.

So when Volke stumbles across a knightmare, a creature made of shadow and terror, he has no reservations. But the knightmare knows a terrible secret: Ruma is a murderer out to spread corrupted magic throughout their island nation. He’s already killed a population of phoenixes and he intends to kill even more.

In order to protect his home, his adopted sister, and the girl he admires from afar, Volke will need to confront his hero, the Master Arcanist Gregory Ruma.

4) Dark Shores- Danielle L. Jensen

Dark Shores (Dark Shores, #1)

I’m pretty sure everyone knows my love of Dark Shores by Danielle Jensen but in case you’ve somehow forgotten, you can read my review (linked above). What a ride Dark Shores turned out to be! Meddling Gods, pirates and Rome inspired! I mean what more can you ask for. And Dark Skies is coming this spring (see link for my part in the cover reveal)!

Speaking of things you really should have seen coming, this was one of my favorite fall releases! Unique dragons and pirates abound in the kick-off to Barker’s new series, The Tide Child. I have linked my review and q and a R. J Barker, above.

While we do not have any information on the second book in the Tide Child series, I will be sure to pass it along as soon as I can find anything out!
