From Devouring Books (Linked In Title Above):
This Top 5 series started back in October and I kind of lost motivation for making it every week. But it’s back! This is a series of books that I want to read that all have a common theme. Psst…. If you at the picture really close, you can just feel the thrill of participation just oozing off that puss <insert sarcasm here>.
I’m not sure my definition of Found Family is the same as everyone else’s so I’m going to start with two I did read and then move on to the three I haven’t (in date order). This way you can see my guidelines for a “found family.”

No one believes in them. But soon no one will forget them.
It’s 1889. The city is on the cusp of industry and power, and the Exposition Universelle has breathed new life into the streets and dredged up ancient secrets. Here, no one keeps tabs on dark truths better than treasure-hunter and wealthy hotelier Séverin Montagnet-Alarie. When the elite, ever-powerful Order of Babel coerces him to help them on a mission, Séverin is offered a treasure that he never imagined: his true inheritance.
To hunt down the ancient artifact the Order seeks, Séverin calls upon a band of unlikely experts: An engineer with a debt to pay. A historian banished from his home. A dancer with a sinister past. And a brother in arms if not blood.
Together, they will join Séverin as he explores the dark, glittering heart of Paris. What they find might change the course of history–but only if they can stay alive.

Release Date: October 8, 2019
Publisher: Feiwel and Friends

The streets of Creije are for the deadly and the dreamers, and four crooks in particular know just how much magic they need up their sleeve to survive.
Tavia, a busker ready to pack up her dark-magic wares and turn her back on Creije for good. She’ll do anything to put her crimes behind her.
Wesley, the closest thing Creije has to a gangster. After growing up on streets hungry enough to swallow the weak whole, he won’t stop until he has brought the entire realm to kneel before him.
Karam, a warrior who spends her days watching over the city’s worst criminals and her nights in the fighting rings, making a deadly name for herself.
And Saxony, a resistance fighter hiding from the very people who destroyed her family, and willing to do whatever it takes to get her revenge.
Everything in their lives is going to plan, until Tavia makes a crucial mistake: she delivers a vial of dark magic—a weapon she didn’t know she had—to someone she cares about, sparking the greatest conflict in decades. Now these four magical outsiders must come together to save their home and the world, before it’s too late. But with enemies at all sides, they can trust nobody. Least of all each other.

Release Date: January 21, 2020
Publisher: HarperTeen
Synopsis:
In Kyrkarta, magic—known as maz—was once a freely available natural resource. Then an earthquake released a magical plague, killing thousands and opening the door for a greedy corporation to make maz a commodity that’s tightly controlled—and, of course, outrageously expensive.
Which is why Diz and her three best friends run a highly lucrative, highly illegal maz siphoning gig on the side. Their next job is supposed to be their last heist ever.
But when their plan turns up a powerful new strain of maz that (literally) blows up in their faces, they’re driven to unravel a conspiracy at the very center of the spellplague—and possibly save the world.
No pressure.

What did you think?
What are your favorite books with Found Families that you have read or ones that you are looking forward to reading?
Anything in my list that you have read or looking forward to reading?
Or maybe you just want to yell at me for using Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom in everything. Go ahead…
Nice selection! I hope to get around to reading The Gilded Wolves sometime. I just love the concept of found families after reading Six of Crows. I’ve heard good things about The Lies of Locke Lamora too.
I am sure everyone did lol! Hence the eye roll ????
I am so looking forward to Into the Crooked Place! That is going to be too much fun!!
I haven’t read The Gilded Wolves yet but like seeing how pretty the ARC cover for Silvered Serpents is makes me think I need to really read this soon lol, and what a score with those ARC fairy gods!!! <3
OMG I LOVED THE GOOD LUCK GIRLS! I can’t believe that I didn’t even think about how it totally fits the found family trope. I gave it 5 stars, I really really liked it. Can’t wait to share my review AND see your thoughts. I didn’t think I was going to love it like I did!
Into the Crooked Place was good, but not as amazing as I wanted it to be. I basically wanted it to be Six of Crows lol. I love how Gilded Wolves, Into the Crooked Place and Six of Crows are all heist books. Actually so is The Good Luck Girls! I was going to do heist books as a theme one week, but I don’t know if everyone will be able to come up with 5 books.
I havent read it yet so hush lol but I absolutely cant wait to!
Nothing is ever six of Crows. And the kicker of it is that the last two or three books I’ve absolutely adored- well except Wilder girls- that wasnt set up as six of Crows meets — were all supposed to be just like SOC and none of them were anything like it. Were they incredible books? Yes. But they weren’t much like I’d anything like SOC. That has to stop and again not because the books arent good they’ve been great. But they are great on their own merits. They dont need the comparison.
I just don’t know how to describe what I wanted out of Into the Crooked Place besides saying I wanted it to be like six of crows bc then you get what I meant. But obviously I want it to be different. I want like… six of crow vibes. Heist vibes.. found family vibes.. spunky well written character vibes. Lol. I like heist books, I like criminals, and I like good characters. And a good plot. So all of that please. But I also think I read Into the Crooked Place at the wrong time.
Timing can be a huge thing. I’ve been on such tight deadlines that some books that I feel needed more breathing time got rushed. It suucks because I think I would’ve liked them more if not in that vacuum. I hate that. I’m trying to be more mindful of that now. Like Gideon the Ninth would not have worked over the summer. It needs time. It isnt a bad thing. Some books need time like wine lol
I know what you mean. Sometimes it’s like if I had read the book at a different time I may have enjoyed it more. But I wanted to read it by the publication date, so I read it when I didn’t really want to. Some books need to be read over a period of time rather than a day or two.
It doesn’t come out till October?
I meant in general. But at the time that I read this I thought it was the right time but maybe it just wasn’t. If I have time then I might do a reread to see if I have a better experience. I did with TWCAD. I started that book at the WRONG time and let me tell you I’m glad I didn’t finish it and actually set it aside for a different time. I should have done the same thing for Into the Crooked Place. I think I was just in a mood where I was being super judgey towards books.
Ahhh! I really need to pick up The Gilded Wolves ????. Also into the Crooked Place sounds amazing! Great list.
Gilded Wolves is fantastic. It opens up Wicked fast and is set is a great mood piece being in old France.
I’m very much looking forward to… Lord I almost wrote Crooked Kingdom ????♀️???? ….Into the Crooked Place… it is going to be awesome!
Oooh, I didn’t know The Gilded Wolves had an announced sequel already! How interesting. I’ve not read any of these yet, but I do so love found families, and Six of Crows and The Gilded Wolves have been on my TBR forever now. :3 Into the Crooked Place sounds really good, too!
I happened to catch the cover reveal on twitter by accident and near dropped the laptop. Now I have to wait till Feb :/.
I’m really excited about ITCP! It is right in my wheelhouse of what I like so hopefully it holds up.
Oh nooo. Waiting is so hard. =/
I suck because I haven’t read ANY of these yet! The shaaaaame.
So glad it’s not just me who seems to pick the same books a lot of the time for things? But I think that’s a good sign of just how much you enjoyed those books! You’re making me super excited to read Six of Crows.
You might be the only one not rolling their eyes at me. Stick around for a while and you may get in the rolling their eyes line. Lol
But then again I’m thrilled to be apart of the enabling people to the SOC/CK cult!!!
