Smoke Thieves by Sally Green features an array of characters that are range from strong to fun to lovable. Each one has a unique voice and face obstacles that change their characters over the course over the plot and make them question their decisions.
Smoke Thieves is the first book in the Smoke Thieves Series and is very much character driven. Greene shines in developing characters that are impossible not to fall in love with. You will root for each one of them even as they make questionable decisions, fall in with nefarious company and even as you question their intent (Demon World comes out Tuesday, August 6^th).
Catherine and Edyon were my two favorite characters, with Tash a close third, in Smoke Thieves and complete opposites of each other.
Catherine is a strong-willed determined princess who is meant to marry a prince she has never met by a dictator father. She is surrounded by cruel men including her brother, Boris and an executor, Noyes that are determined to make her cower. However, Catherine finds strength and a place in her new country Pitoria as they undermine her every step of the way.
Edyon is a naïve but intelligent boy raised without a father. Limited in his options, he has become a bit of a kleptomaniac trying to fill many voids. Missing a father figure, unable to study law and having a mother lacking understanding of his situation, Edyon finds nothing but trouble throughout his days. A gifted liar and a terrible thief, Edyon has no idea what his heritage is, nor why, on one of the most bizarre days of his, or I believe, anyone’s life, three people are suddenly very interested in befriending him.
Throw in two brilliantly paired demon hunters (Tash, the young spunky girl, paired with the older, protective Gravell) and Princess Catherine’s loyal, personal guard that ultimately collide after a series of wonderfully cultivated twists, surprises and mishaps?
